”Work on / in (the) Public,” a project by Klub Zwei in cooperation with MAIZ, Autonomous Center by and for Migrant Women, Linz.

”Work on / in (the) Public” means to criticize the dominant public sphere. This includes the work to change it, and involves supporting, strengthening and creating a network of all those different public spheres to which the dominant one refuses to grant social significance and the right to be heard.

Our project is the attempt of an egalitarian cooperation with the migrant Women participating. At the same time we are aware that it is us who invite to ”take part” and who do so from the position of the privileged citizen. “Equality” remains utopian so long as the one has political rights that the other is denied.

Since 1992 Klub Zwei, Simone Bader and Jo Schmeiser, have been working at the intersection of art, film and new media. Central to our work are current sociopolitical topics and an analysis of the ways in which they are represented in the media and in public. On the one hand we want to achieve critical reflection of representation and public intervention. Because the option for a change of society depends on the politics of representation accompanying it. On the other hand our goal is to develop an exchange between different cultural contexts and forms of egalitarian cooperation.
